The eMachines 566ir is a computer I appreciate less for its capabilities, and more for the context in which it existed in the year 2000. Retail rebates that made it cost $0* to take home, plus the infamous claim of NEVER being obsolete! I’ve discussed this on LGR Tech Tales but I’ve wanted to take a closer look at one of the actual systems, and finding this one at VCFMW 2022 complete with all the stickers was a prime opportunity.

02.10.2022I did not get one cause of the rebates. My mother kept "cheap" stuff with revbates but those never actualled up usually for sstems that were kind of inferior but cheaper if the rebate ever showed up but for a printer that died and we had to replace it when the only rebate i ever remeber ever getting clezaredc toour account.

01.10.2022We had a 366 eMachines tower. Not the best machine, but was a definite improvement to the 386 Packard Bell it replaced.

01.10.2022The CD Drive is flat because it is the upgraded writer version. The curved version was only a CD reader I believe. Great video! takes me back to playing UT and C&C late into the night. I wish I had kept mine – I had the upgraded flat CRT screen and a voodoo fx dedicated GPU too. I don't miss the Celeron CPU though, so easy to bottleneck them.

01.10.2022I had an emachines computer probably slightly older than this as I got it and a voodoo3 for Half-Life. I upgraded the heck out of it until I couldn't upgrade any more. 😅

01.10.2022I remember eMachines. That sticker should have read "instantly obsolete" since they were always woefully underpowered.

28.09.2022Were the manufacturer's sound drivers (DOS if applicable and Windows) installed on it when you got it? If not, that could have something to do with the issues. IIRC, some Sound Blaster clones needed a DOS driver to work properly.

28.09.2022I had this tower as my first family computer, I remember discovering the "hidden" USB port 😆

28.09.2022This would have been what I used to play Diablo 2 and eventually Everquest. EQ was the reason I kept upgrading my PC as I kept getting wanting more and more better graphics, updating the machine in 2004, but kept the case for another 4 years.

28.09.2022I used to work in PCHO at Best Buy in the late 90's into the early 2000's. People always bought into these things, and would happily slurp up MSN and Compuserve that they had to sign up for to get it for free. These things were total junk, but on the plus side we were usually able to sell service plans with these things. I hated selling service plans. Those things were Best Buy's bread and butter.

28.09.2022I remember PC gaming as always being a little more expensive but worth the cost of a few more dollars. Now, I think PC gaming has become a complete money hole that brought me back to my old love… Bowling! (and basketball). Thank you, Nvidia. You suck. 😋

26.09.2022First PC was a cheap Compaq tower featuring the new blazing-fast "PC100" ram, which is why I bought it and not a competing model that still used PC66 ram.
It's entertaining to look back and laugh at the featureset, but keep in mind that those features made the machine far more useful than what came before just five years earlier. You had new and improved Windows 98, USB, decent video capabilities, and a wonderful window onto this new thing called Internet. And you could do a whole lot on the Internet.
Today of course we have hardware that is perhaps three orders of magnitude faster, three orders of magnitude of RAM and disk storage, miracles of database programming such as GoogleMaps, and an amazing store model represented by Amazon–if I want to buy something, I have near-infinite choice, it's cheap, and it's on my doorstep in 24 hours. Amazing!
But these old machines are treasures, and can still be used for many things. You can write a book, run a large spreadsheet, and still surf the Net to a certain extent. In fact, some Linux variant would make this box highly productive. It's too bad that 99% of the industry chased after Microsoft's upgrade philosophy of planned obsolescence, but selling new operating systems is how they make their money.
By the way, after my old Compaq in 1998 I built my own system in 2000. Over the years I've gone through five different motherboards, a dozen CPUs, four power supplies, a dozen hard drives, and a half-dozen displays. The one constant is the original case–the beige case is still the same as it was on day 1. Still has a 3 1/2 floppy drive, which still works.
